How to Measure for New Garage Door

Knowing how to measure your garage door is an important step in finding the perfect garage door for your home. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to easily measure your garage door opening.

Size Matters

Measurements are important when it comes to a successful garage door installation or garage door opener installation. Without having the right measurements, you could end up with a new garage door that is either too big or too small for your opening. To get the best results, make sure to double-check all your measurements before purchasing a new door. Here’s how you can you do this yourself at home:

Tools Needed

Measuring your garage door opening is a relatively easy task. All you really need is:

  • Tape measure
  • Ladder
  • And a little bit of patience!

With just these few tools, you can successfully measure your existing garage door opening and ensure you’re getting the right size garage door and opener system for new installation.

Follow These Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Measure Width

Place the end of the tape measure at the left side of the bottom corner of your garage door and then pull it across to the right side of the bottom corner. Make sure that the tape measure is level so you get an accurate measurement. Record this measurement as you will need it when installing your new garage door opener or when buying a new garage door.

2. Measure Height

To measure the height of your garage door opening, use a tape measure and start at the highest point, near the middle of the opening. Measure down to the threshold of the door and record the measurement. When shopping for a new garage door, this measurement will be critical in determining which size to purchase. It is also important to consider any extra features that may be necessary during a garage door opener installation, such as the door being higher than standard to accommodate an opener.

3. Measure Headroom

Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the highest point of the garage door opening to the ceiling. Standard garage tracks and most garage door openers require at least 12-15″ of headroom for installation. If the headroom is less, you may need special garage door tracks or alternate opener systems.

4. Measure Sideroom

To measure the sideroom, place your measuring tape on the wall nearest the opening and measure the distance from the wall to the nearest edge of the door. It’s important to also measure any obstructions in the area, such as outdoor lighting fixtures, garden hoses, and other objects that could be in the way of the garage door opener installation.

5. Measure from Floor to Ceiling

To measure from the floor to the ceiling in your garage, begin by measuring from the concrete floor up to the ceiling (or the lowest obstruction) in your garage. Make sure to measure with your existing garage door closed as it will give you an accurate reading of the distance between the floor and ceiling. Once you have measured this distance, write it down and use it when ordering your new garage door.

That’s It!

Measuring for a new garage door is relatively easy and straightforward. By following the above steps, you can make sure that you have the right size garage door and opener for your opening.

Make sure to double-check all measurements to ensure that your new garage door and opener installation goes as smoothly as possible. With the right measurements in hand, you can confidently purchase new garage door and garage door opener system with ease.
