How To Align Your Garage Door Safety Sensors | Step-by-Step Guide

When your safety reversing sensors are misaligned, your garage door won’t close all the way from your remote control and your garage door opener lights will flash. Most modern automatic garage door opener systems have self-diagnostic capability. On a security plus 2.0 garage door opener, the UP arrow will flash four times followed by the DOWN arrow flashing six times. This indicates that your garage door opener sensors are misaligned or obstructed. On some garage door openers, the learn LED will flash four times every 10 seconds, indicating the sensors are either misaligned or obstructed.

Aligning The Sensors on Your Automatic Garage Door Opener System

Follow the simple steps below to align your garage door opener safety sensors in 5 minutes or less:

Step 1

Locate the receiving sensor, which has a green LED. This receiving sensor LED will be off, dim, or flickering. This indicates the sensor is out of alignment.

Step 2

Loosen the wingnut on the receiving safety sensor. Move the sensor around until the LED is glowing steadily and no longer flickering. Tighten the wing nut. When the receiving safety sensor is properly aligned, the green LED will glow steadily.

Step 3

Now it’s time to test your garage door safety sensor reversal system. See your owners’ manual on how to test the safety reversal system for your particular model garage door opener system. Any time you make further adjustments, the safety reversal system must be tested.

That’s It!

Your safety reversing sensors are now successfully aligned.

Warning: Without a properly installed safety reversal system, persons (small children in particular) could be seriously injured or killed by a closing garage door. Incorrect adjustment of garage door travel limits will interfere with proper operating of safety reversal systems. After ANY adjustments are made, the safety reversal system MUST be tested. Your garage doors MUST reverse on contact with 1-1/2″ (3.8cm) high object (or 2 X 4) laid flat on floor.
